New Developments Division

The New Developments Division, based within Assessment Research and Development, co-ordinates and manages the development and delivery of new types of products and services, with a primary focus on Admissions Tests, together with Assessment for Learning.

Admissions Tests

The unit has a team dedicated to Admissions Tests for Higher Education: the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT), English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT), Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) and STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) Mathematics. The tests have been developed in partnership with leading higher education institutions, with close collaboration on pilot studies. Intensive research supports the development process; an ethic that underpins all test development by Cambridge Assessment. Validation research thus lies at the heart of the test development and review process.

The Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) was originally developed in response to requests from the University of Cambridge. However, as the reputation of Cambridge Assessment’s dedicated team grew, the New Developments Division received requests from other institutions to use the TSA, including the University of Oxford and UCL.

Assessment for Learning

Working in partnership with Heinemann, the New Developments Division has developed achieve, an interactive assessment for learning system that supports teachers in the implementation of formative assessment in the classroom. achieve focuses on KS3 subjects: Maths and Science.
