New way to help teachers - Cambridge heavyweights join forces to pioneer assessment education

An innovative qualification designed to promote excellence in assessment has been launched by the Cambridge Assessment Network. The inaugural Certificate Programme in Principles and Practice of Assessment will begin teaching tomorrow (28th February 2006).

The Cambridge Assessment Network has joined forces with the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education to provide a course for teachers, examiners, those who are developing new qualifications and anyone interested in assessment.

Andrew Watts, Director of the Cambridge Assessment Network, said: "Our aim is to foster a virtual centre of excellence in assessment. By offering this unique course in conjunction with the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education we will promote excellence within the assessment community and equip practitioners with the tools to develop their individual skills."

The qualification is designed to expand participant’s knowledge and formalise their existing skills. The course will cover a wide range of topics including the validity and reliability of assessment, specification development, awarding procedures and evidence in assessment.

Participants will not only gain a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of assessment. By completing all four modules, they will also be awarded the Certificate in Continuing Education (Principles and Practice of Assessment) from the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.

The course will be delivered via weekly seminars and complemented with further study delivered via an e-learning environment.
