STEP across

With immediate effect the administration of STEP will be managed by the specialist Admissions Test Team based within OCR’s parent body, Cambridge Assessment.

For a number of years OCR has run an examination called ‘STEP’ (Sixth Term Examination Paper) in Mathematics.

STEP Mathematics is used by Cambridge and Warwick Universities to assess the suitability of candidates for their courses. There are three Mathematics papers. Mathematics I and II are based on the specifications for Advanced GCE Mathematics, with Mathematics II being more challenging that Mathematics I. The content of Mathematics III is wider and is only suitable for candidates studying for Further Mathematics.

With immediate effect the administration of this examination will be managed by the specialist Admissions Test Team based within OCR’s parent body, Cambridge Assessment.

The structure and purpose of the examination will not be changed in any way, but the transfer of the administration to Cambridge Assessment makes perfect sense because it fits alongside the tests already being offered by its Admissions Test Team.

Entries for STEP Mathematics will now be made using a secure online entries system in much the same way that candidates are registered for admissions tests such as the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT), the English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) and the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) Admissions Test. Centres will be able to start registering their candidates in early February 2008 for the tests.

STEP Mathematics examinations will take place in late June 2008 on the following dates:

Announcements about the change are also on Interchange - OCR's admin site for centres - and notices are being sent out to Examinations Officers.
