What is your role in the Digital Assessment team?

I am co-sponsor along with Juliet Wilson.

What can people ask you about?

Direction and vision of the programme.

Tell us something about you that we don't need to know, but helps us get to know you

I’m a children’s book author (pen name P J Canning).

What is the most exciting thing in the future of assessment?

Currently, the way we do exams can cause a gap between the actual course of study followed and the documented curriculum. Exams can get in the way of good teaching. These gaps relate to things that are not easily assessed using the methods commonly used in summative assessments now. I think that, with the help of digital technology, the future of assessment can bridge this gap. More authentic assessment leads to more authentic learning.

What most annoys you about the assessment industry?

How risk averse exam systems often are and too focused on performance on the day.

What are your interests?

Personally, children’s fiction. Professionally, improving the fairness of our education system.
