Gain knowledge and confidence to design assessments with AI. Develop your understanding of ethical considerations and learn practical approaches to help you navigate this new technology.
Why choose this workshop?
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has widely disrupted the world of assessment.
Many practitioners feel anxious about this changing landscape, in which the relationship between technology and principled assessment practice is altered.
In fact, over 70% of assessment professionals in our customer survey (2024) said they wanted to learn more about the challenges and opportunities presented by AI and assessment.
This live, interactive series of three online workshops will provide you with a solid foundation in using AI for item generation and assessment design from Cambridge expert, Niall McNulty.
Used effectively and safely, AI can save time and resources, but it is essential to address potential security, privacy and bias risks. By applying expert judgement and robust safeguards, AI can improve assessment design rather than undermine it.
This workshop series will demonstrate AI’s potential to support your practice - helping to streamline your processes, standardise question generation, and create different question types - without replacing your expert judgement.
The sessions focus on core principles applicable to any large language model (LLM) and offer practical skills to help you maximise AI’s potential while ensuring quality and fairness.
Each session is designed to build on the previous one, incorporating hands-on learning, reflection, and real-world application of AI tools.
Who should attend?
This workshop series is for anyone involved in developing, reviewing, or managing assessments, and will be ideal as a starting point if you’re new to AI or looking to build confidence.
The session is open to anyone who would find it useful. Previous attendees have included:
- Learning designers and instructional designers
- Online learning developers
- Teachers, lecturers, and instructors
- Publishing professionals
- Subject specialists at school and ministry level
- Assessment managers
- Subject leaders and heads of department
Although the workshop content will focus on formative assessment, the concepts and ideas can be scaled to suit summative assessments.

We’re trusted by over 1,000 organisations across 100 countries and are backed by world-class research from the University of Cambridge.
We proudly hold Dual Accreditation by the Professional Development Consortium, officially recognising us as a Provider of Training Excellence.
Upon successful completion of Designing assessments with AI, you’ll be awarded a Certificate of Attendance from Cambridge University Press & Assessment as recognition of your learning.
Workshop outline
This workshop series is accredited with a Certificate of Attendance for continuing professional development (6 CPD hours). To be eligible, two live sessions must be attended.
Please note that, due to the relevance of this workshop’s topic, we expect it to be in high demand - book now to avoid disappointment.
Workshop 1: 11 Mar 2026 | Introduction to AI in formative assessment
11 Mar 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30 (UK time)
In this first workshop we’ll cover the understanding of how AI works and what’s involved. Topics include the overview of formative assessments, generative AI in education, AI’s role in question generation and ethical considerations.
Workshop 2: 18 Mar 2026 | AI workflow for generating assessment content
18 Mar 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30 (UK time)
In the second workshop we explore the practical aspects of generating assessment content. We’ll develop a structured workflow to effectively design, refine and enhance the quality of AI-generated formative assessment items.
Workshop 3: 25 Mar 2026 | Risks, quality assurance and evaluation
25 Mar 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30 (UK time)
The final workshop will look at quality assurance and risk awareness. Covering identifying and mitigating AI biases, quality assurance methods and application, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards and exploring limitations and scalability challenges.
Throughout the workshop series, you’ll have the opportunity to generate questions based on spreadsheet inputs, evaluate these questions, consider quality control and ethical issues, and develop the skills to generate formative assessment content using AI.
In addition to the workshops, you’ll receive resources to support applying your learning to your own context, including a checklist for AI-generated assessments.
Please note: participants will need access to an AI tool throughout the workshop series.
What our attendees say
I am so pleased I attended this course. I have had very little interaction with AI tools and none at all in a professional context, partly because of scepticism, partly because of confidence, and this course has completely changed that. I now recognise that I am still the expert in the human-AI relationship and that, with the right guidance and some experimentation, I can become more confident in using it and reaping its benefits, whilst having the processes in place to guard against some of its challenges."
Annie Vincent, Reporting and Guidance Specialist, United Kingdom
Key learning outcomes
By the end of the workshop series, you’ll be able to:
- Understand the basics of generative AI, including models, data, and algorithms
- Diagnose potential issues with AI-generated content, such as hallucinations
- Analyse risks involved in using AI, including privacy, security, and bias
- Develop new methods to generate assessment content with AI
- Develop effective workflows for utilising AI in assessment design
- Plan, design, and generate high-quality formative assessments, including effective distractors and feedback.

FAQs
What is AI’s relationship with assessment?
AI is reshaping the entire educational landscape, impacting everything from students to exam boards, and their relationship with assessment.
In this workshop series, artificial intelligence is framed as a tool designed to support assessment, not replace human expertise, helping to streamline processes, standardise question generation and create varied question types.
Used effectively and safely, it can save time and resources, but it is essential to address potential security, privacy and bias risks.
By applying expert judgement and robust safeguards, AI can enhance assessment design rather than undermine it.
