Please note: this workshop series previously ran under the title of ‘Authentic assessment in the age of AI: how to meaningfully incorporate AI into your assessments’.

If you allow your learners to use AI during an assessment does this mean it is no longer valid? The answer to this important question is not a simple yes or no: it depends heavily on what you're intending to measure.

Why choose this workshop?

This workshop series will give you the confidence to make informed decisions about when your learners should be allowed to use AI in your assessments.

You will examine the key concerns around authenticity, validity, and the cognitive impact of AI use, as well as why AI should be encouraged or prohibited in certain contexts.

In this live two-part online workshop series, you will explore how incorporating AI use can both undermine and enhance the validity of your assessments, in certain situations, and how as practitioners we can navigate this developing landscape.

Through the lens of ‘Authentic Assessment’, you will consider how you can design the use of AI in your assessment tasks to meaningfully resemble those learners will encounter in future professional roles. This will cover assessment tasks such as data analysis, literature reviews, content generation, programming, as well as the use of AI models as human-surrogates, facilitating the development and assessment of skills traditionally associated with human-human interaction.

Workshop trainer and Senior Professional Development Manager at The Assessment Network, James Beadle, will also ask you to consider how some assessments cannot currently include AI use if we want them to remain meaningful, defensible, and genuinely authentic.

He will focus on:

  1. How AI tools can facilitate learners in demonstrating their own understanding through authentic assessment
  2. How AI tools can act as a creative tool that can help learners solve challenging problems and produce complex artefacts.

Drawing on this Cambridge expertise, you’ll be empowered to understand how AI can be effectively applied within your own assessment context and to meaningfully consider the pros and cons of its inclusion.

Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed at anyone looking to make considered and informed decisions on when to introduce learner AI use within their assessments, whilst maintaining or improving upon their overall validity.

If you’re new to using generative AI models, or have limited experience, this workshop will give you the confidence to get going.

Or, if you're more experienced and want to further develop your approaches in a supportive, yet critical environment, this workshop will help to justify your decision making around AI to learners and other stakeholders.

Previous attendees have included:

  • Learning Designers and Instructional Designers
  • Online Learning Developers
  • Teachers, Lecturers, and Instructors
  • Publishing Professionals
  • Subject Specialists at school and ministry level
  • Assessment Managers
  • Subject Leaders and Heads of Department

Workshop outline

This workshop is accredited with a Certificate of Attendance for continuing professional development (4 CPD hours). To be eligible, both live sessions must be attended.

This workshop series will explore the different ways that learner use of AI could be incorporated into assessments, while maintaining their authenticity. You’ll explore several different case studies and be given the opportunity to consider the applicability of these within your own context.

Assessment validity, and the need to ensure that we are measuring what we intended to measure, will be a key underlying theme throughout.

Workshop 1: 03 Nov 2026 | Incorporating learner use of AI into assessment

03 Nov 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30 (UK time)

In the first session, we’ll explore the different ways AI could be incorporated into your learner’s assessments.

You’ll explore several different case studies and be given the opportunity to consider the applicability of these within your own context. Emphasis will be placed on the difference between an integral and assistive use of AI, and the corresponding implications for accessibility and fairness.

Workshop 2: 10 Nov 2026 | When, and when not, to use AI

10 Nov 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30 (UK time)

In the second session, we’ll look at different frameworks that can help us determine whether it’s appropriate, or even essential, to include, or prohibit, the use of AI within an assessment.

We’ll examine how AI may impact our existing assessment validation methods.

By the end of the workshop series, you’ll have a greater understanding of the use of AI within assessment and have had an opportunity to apply these through practical exercises to support your understanding. You’ll also take away resources to support you in applying the learning to your own context.

FAQs

What is authentic assessment?

‘Authentic assessment’ aims to ensure that assessment tasks meaningfully resemble the conditions and challenges learners will face in future professional roles. It often involves real-world scenarios such as research projects, case-based tasks, working with real data, or role-play activities, giving learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in realistic contexts.

As generative AI becomes routine in professional practice, the challenge is clear: how must some assessments evolve to stay meaningful, defensible, and genuinely authentic in an AI-rich world.
